Frequently Asked Questions

This page provides general information about therapy, assessments, and working with Mindful Families Australia. If your question is not answered here, please feel free to contact our team.

  • We provide therapy and assessment for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. We support people across the lifespan and work with individuals and families experiencing a wide range of emotional, relational, and life challenges.

We are a neurodivergent-affirming and trauma-informed practice and welcome all individuals and families.

  • Neurodivergent-affirming practice means we recognise and respect neurological differences as a natural part of human diversity. We do not view neurodivergence as something to be fixed. Therapy is adapted to individual communication styles, sensory needs, and preferences. Masking is not expected, and lived experience is respected.

A formal diagnosis is not required to access neurodivergent-affirming support.

  • Our practitioners draw on a range of evidence-based therapies. The include but are not limited to, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based and compassion-focused approaches, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Systemic Family Therapy, Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), and Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Approaches are selected collaboratively and adapted to suit individual needs and circumstances.

  • No referral is required to book a private appointment. If you wish to access Medicare rebates, a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP is required. Our team can assist you with this process if needed.

  • Yes. We offer face-to-face appointments at our Nerang clinic as well as Telehealth sessions. Telehealth can be a helpful option for individuals and families who prefer or require remote access.

  • Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Session frequency is discussed collaboratively and may change over time depending on needs, goals, and circumstances.

  • Parent or caregiver involvement is guided by the child’s age, needs, and goals. In many cases, therapy includes parent consultations to support understanding, regulation, and connection within the family system.

  • Yes. We offer clinical family and systemic therapy to support communication, connection, and understanding within families. Family therapy may involve parents, caregivers, children, adolescents, or other significant family members.

Family therapy can support families navigating conflict, separation, blended family transitions, and changes in family structure. Our focus is on safety, communication, and supporting the wellbeing of all family members.

  • No. Mindful Families Australia provides therapeutic services only. Our practitioners do not prepare court reports, letters, or expert opinions for family law or legal proceedings.

    • Where court orders specify that a child is permitted or required to attend therapy, we may be able to offer services provided that:

    • A copy of the current court orders is supplied prior to commencing therapy
The orders clearly allow the child to attend therapy

    • Informed consent is obtained from all parties with parental responsibility

These requirements help ensure therapy is provided ethically, lawfully, and in the best interests of the child.

  • In most cases, consent from all parties with parental responsibility is required for a child to attend therapy. If you are unsure about consent requirements in your circumstances, please contact our admin team before booking.

  • Yes. We offer comprehensive, neurodivergent-affirming assessments for Autism and ADHD. You can read more about our assessments, process and costs on our website under “Assessments.” Please contact us for current assessment availability and more information.

  • Our assessments aim to provide a strength-based understanding and recommendations for you. Where appropriate, they may result in a formal diagnosis in line with current clinical guidelines.

  • Yes. Medicare rebates are available for eligible clients with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP. Generally you are eligible for up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year. Rebate amounts do vary depending on whether you are seeing a generally registered psychologist or a clinical psychologist. • Yes. We support NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. Please contact our admin team to discuss suitability, availability, and funding arrangements.

  • Yes. Therapy is confidential within the limits of the law. Your therapist will explain confidentiality and any legal exceptions during your first session and answer any questions you may have.

  • No. Mindful Families Australia is not a crisis or emergency service. If you or someone you care for requires immediate support, please contact 000, Lifeline (13 11 14), Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800), or your local emergency mental health service.

  • When you arrive, our admin team will check you have completed your Intake and Consent Forms via the email link sent out to you.

The first session with your therapist provides an opportunity to discuss what has brought you to therapy, explore goals, understand the therapy process, and ask any questions. There is no expectation to share more than you are comfortable with. Your therapist may also ask you to complete a questionnaire to see how you are currently feeling. Together you will discuss whether things feel like a “good fit” and the frequency of therapy.

  • It’s okay to feel unsure. At Mindful Families we really understand the courage it can take to reach out for support. You are welcome to contact our team to have a chat about what we offer and discuss your needs, or attend an initial session to explore whether therapy feels like a good fit for you.

  • The length of therapy varies depending on individual goals, needs, and circumstances. This is reviewed collaboratively over time.

  • You can contact us via phone or email, or complete the enquiry form on our website.

We aim to respond to all enquiries within 1–2 business days.
